Job Title: Tutor Reading and/or Math - Grades 6-8
Terms of Employment: Hourly Based on Certification
Pay Grade: Hourly - Certified Tutor - $30.00 per hour / Non- Certified Tutor - $15.00 per hour
This is a temporary position funded by the ALL IN VA grant. BCPS will determine staffing needs annually during the grant funding period 2023- 2026.
Job Summary:
The purpose of this job is to support students and classroom instruction by providing tutoring in math and/or reading based on academic need. Tutors are expected to provide the best instructional practices, which ensure students have a quality educational experience that would facilitate academic achievement and instructional growth in reading/mathematics.
Essential Duties:
- Teach targeted reading/math interventions to individuals and small groups of students using research-based strategies and resources.
- Provide group and individual instruction to motivate students, and effectively utilize the time available for instructional activities.
- Pursue a variety of methodology in teaching and instructing students.
- Conduct teaching and instructional activities, using educational equipment, materials, books, software, calculators, and other learning aides.
- Collaborate with teachers individually to identify the reading/math deficits of students, to set learning goals and targets, and to problem solve with teachers to develop best practices for continuous academic growth of students in reading/math.
- Participate in the collection of data.
- Meet regularly with the classroom teachers to plan reading/math instruction that correlates with the individual student’s needs or as requested by the classroom teacher.
- Maintain a record of attendance.
- Maintain appropriate standards of student behavior, using behavioral management strategies and techniques, including positive reinforcement and behavior shaping procedures.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information.
- Provide high- quality general education instructions to students who are at-risk in reading/math.
- Use identified scientific, research-based interventions focused specifically on individual student difficulties.
- Participate in universal screening activities and assist with the analysis of the data to identify students in need of response to intervention services. Participate in required training for the Tutoring Program.
- Be prepared to perform the job in accordance with the Tutoring Program.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as requested by the Superintendent and /or Principal.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications:
- Teaching experience preferred
- VA teaching license preferred
- Understanding of scientifically- based, mathematical intervention strategies and research
- Data/evidence to demonstrate the candidate’s effectiveness as a reading/math instructor
- Experience using diagnostic tools to determine reading/math proficiency/deficits
- Such alternatives as the Superintendent or Superintendent’s designee may find appropriate and acceptable.
Physical Demands:
Performs sedentary work that involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time: requires little or no dexterity.
