Job Title:     Safe Schools Coordinator

Terms of Employment:  12 Months

Pay Grade:  123

 

Job Summary:  

The purpose of this job is to ensure the preparedness of the school division and individual schools to provide a safe and secure learning environment for students and staff and respond appropriately to emergency situations.

 

Essential Duties

  1. Collaborates with the Superintendent and Executive Director of School Administration to serve as the school division’s safety official.
  2. Serves as a liaison with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office regarding the school resource officer program and other safety programs.  Also serves as liaison with other community partners regarding the division safety program.  
  3. Organizes and leads the Division Safety Advisory Team
  4. Coordinates the school traffic guard program, including budgeting and monitoring and adjustment of services. 
  5. Coordinates the school and district video surveillance, badge access, and other safety technology systems, including budget and bid preparation, and monitoring and adjustment of services. 
  6. Coordinates shelter activities including preparation and revision of memorandum of agreement with other governmental agencies; providing shelter liaison information and training to principals; and serving as the BCPS representative in county-wide emergency planning. 
  7. Coordinates school and district crisis management plans, including planning simulation drills,cooperative efforts with other agencies.
  8. Serves as point of contact and client administrator for the Emergency Response and Reporting Software. 
  9. Ensures that all components of the annual Safety Audit and drills are completed for the division and each school.
  10. Coordinates with the Director of Student Support Services to implement training for and manage Threat Assessment teams and protocols.  
  11. Maintains current knowledge of safety and security issues and trends in the school setting, including but not limited to gang activities, bullying, illegal drugs, and crisis management. 
  12. Provides in-service training to school and district staff members on a wide spectrum of security and safety issues. 
  13. Visits periodically all campuses and district buildings to assess school safety procedures, contract services, and equipment.
  14. Oversees and manages the division safety and security budget.
  15. Seeks, writes, submits, and oversees safety grants for division and school safety initiatives and improvements.
  16. Available after school hours to collaborate with BCPS administration and the Bedford County Sheriff's Office on school safety emergencies.
  17. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications 

Bachelor’s Degree in education, criminal justice, or acceptable equivalent. 

Minimum of five (5) years of work experience in a related field.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

 

Physical Demands

Performs sedentary and active work that involves sitting, standing, and walking; requires little or no dexterity.
