Job Summary

 

To provide health services and leadership in establishing a complete and effective program of school health consistent with Virginia guidelines, Board of Nursing regulations, and local School Board policy.  Organizes, implements, and maintains comprehensive school health records and follows state health mandates.

 

Essential Duties

 

  1. Provide training in the areas of CPR, diabetes, and first aide to Bedford County School employees as required by the Code of Virginia.

 

  1. Special Education duties as assigned; obtaining student medical history, preparation of reports, attendance at meeting such as SCT, 504, and IEP meetings.

 

  1. Acts as a consultant to part-time nurses in regards to special medical needs of individual students.

 

  1. Work closely with other school health professionals; i.e.: speech, occupational and physical therapists, school psychologists and school social workers to meet the individual needs of respective students.

 

  1. Functions as a contributing team member of the school staff in all aspects of the school program.

 

  1. Reviews emergency cards and health information of students and develops health care plans based on information provided.

 

  1. Shares confidential health information and educates the appropriate staff on a need to know basis regarding this information.

 

  1. Performs and documents results of state health mandated screenings in the required timeframe.

 

  1. Provides consultation and referral to students primary medical care providers for evaluation with treatment and follow-up, if necessary, for current or suspected health problems.

 

  1. Carries out in the school setting communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines for universal precautions, prevention of blood-borne pathogens exposure and hazardous medical waste disposal.

 

  1. Follows policy and procedure guidelines when administering medication, uses nursing process for assessment of student health concerns and documents properly.

 

  1. Collects data based on clinic activity and turns it in monthly to coordinator, contributes health information to the students and public in written and oral presentation form.

 

  1. Serves as a healthy role model and encourages each student to become a health conscious person and knowledgeable health consumer.

 

  1. Alerts administration to health and safety concerns that exist within the school environment.

 

  1. Trains/supervises clinic back up staff and reports safety concerns to administration & nurse supervisor.

 

  1. Serves on school committees and attends faculty/staff meetings when indicated.

 

  1. Serves as an advocate for the needs of children. Encourages healthy eating habits among students/ staff.

 

  1. Assists as requested by administration to follow up illness or truancy concerns.

 

  1. Demonstrates ability to be a leader and uses good judgment in an emergency school situation.

 

  1. Performs such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as the Principal and/or Supervisor of Health Services may assign.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

Current Virginia license as a Registered Nurse, must meet the school nurse qualifications set by the state board of education and nursing.  Must hold a nursing degree (BSN preferred) from an accredited school, college or university.  Must have a valid Virginia driver’s license.  Must have at least three (3) years experience as a nurse in community health or pediatric health work setting.  Must maintain current training in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.  Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
