Job Summary
To assist in providing the kind of instruction and learning environment that will enable students to master the reading skills appropriate to age, grade level, and individual capacity.
Essential Duties
- Provides leadership and service in the diagnosis of reading problems and development of prescriptive remediation.
- Maintains an inventory of specialize materials for testing and remediation.
- Assist teachers and parents in understanding the nature of students’ reading problems and nature of remediation.
- Coordinates an effective reading program with classroom teachers in grade levels K-4.
- Keeps students’ records for specific reading skills and achievement,
- Devises individual educational programs based on diagnostic data for students in the reading improvement program.
- Coordinates in-service education for classroom teachers and parents.
- Provides diagnostic, placements and consultation services to all classroom teachers.
- Attends in-service workshops and demonstrations pertinent to methods and materials appropriate to various levels of reading instruction.
- Performs such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
A valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement as a reading specialist is required. Three (3) years of successful full-time classroom teaching experience with an emphasis in reading instruction is also required. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board or Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
