Job Summary

 

This position is responsible for assisting the school principal in the daily operation and administration of an assigned school.  The school assistant principal is expected to be learner-centered, future-focused, and innovative in support of the Bedford County Public Schools Strategic Plan.  This position is responsible for supervising staff, creating a safe environment, monitoring curriculum, budget development, and other duties associated with the successful operation of a school.

 

Essential Duties

 

  1. Articulates and advocates for the Bedford County Public Schools’ mission, vision, core values, and cultural norms to young learners, teachers, support staff, and the school community.

 

  1. Supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of learning on learner-centered principles and competency-based assessments.

 

  1. Supports innovative practices that enhance student learning opportunities and focuses on motivating learners by exploring their interests and passions.

 

  1. Implements and enforces all federal, state, and local law, policies, and regulations.

 

  1. Supervises professional, paraprofessional, administrative, and nonprofessional personnel assigned to the school.

 

  1. Assumes responsibility for the safety and administration of the school plant.

 

  1. Maintains high standards of student conduct through discipline that models positive behavior interventions and restorative justice.

 

  1. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.

 

  1. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the school Principal or other appropriate administrators.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

 

Must possess a Master’s degree and the Virginia Postgraduate Professional License and be licensed in school administration and supervision.  Five (5) years of successful experience as a teacher, administrator, or supervisor with some of the experience on the assigned level of employment.  Such experience to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the phone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height; to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead.

Supervision Exercised:  Licensed and non-licensed staff of an assigned school.
